Our History

Learn how the NUS Co-op has grown in supporting the NUS community over the years

A Student-Centred Founding

1969

Peter Lim, the then-Student Liaison Officer founded the University of Singapore Co-operative Bookstore Society Limited to address the escalating prices of textbooks

The Co-op was registered on 11 April 1969 and Peter Lim was appointed its first Chairman

1974

Two new branches opened at Ladyhill Campus and Engineering Campus

1979

First store opened at Yusof Ishak House at the new NUS campus

Growing Contributions to Campus Life

1980

Name changed to National University of Singapore Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited.

1983

Two representatives of the NUSSU Ex-co co-opted onto the Management Committee

Main store moved to its current location at the Central Forum

1985

The Science and Medical Bookshop (LT27) opened

1987

The Book Assistance Scheme, funded by annual surpluses, launched to provide book awards to needy students. (The Scheme was re-named to the Book Award in 2010)

1998

Partnered the NUS Computer Centre to launch the Notebook Ownership Scheme

1999

Grew number of outlets to five with the opening of the Notebook Service Centre at LT26

Started contributing to the NUS Endowment Fund with a $10,000 initial contribution

2000

Contributed $15,000 to the NUS Endowment Fund to set up the Dr. Lau Kieng Hiong Gold Medal, in memory of his service as President of the NUS Co-op for 15 years

The Co-op Today

2002

Assumed management of Academic Dress sales and rental

Started assisting in the production of course packs

2003

Established the Notebook Distribution Centre

2005

Opened a store in the NUS High School, increasing the number of outlets to six

Licensed by NUS to develop selected university merchandise for sale at our stores.

2006

Opened a store in the Bukit Timah Campus

Licensed by NUS to develop selected university merchandise for sale at our stores.

2010

Opening of childcare centre, the Little Skool-House @ Kent Vale

Began collaborating with NUSSU to provide free NUS Co-op membership for all freshmen with effect from Academic Year 2010/2011

2012

Successfully won a bid to set up a new concept lifestyle store in University Town, which will open in January 2013
